The Shiba male is between 40 and 50 cms high, while the female is between 35 and 45 cms in height. The reference is of a height to length ratio of 10 to 11, which makes the shiba a very proportionate dog and less subject to spinal problems.

The shiba looks muscular underneath that wonderful double-stratus of fur. Sturdy and agile, the shiba has strong physical attributes. S/he runs well (and fast!) and can brake on a dime; our male actually enjoys screeching to a halt on his forelegs, letting the hind legs lift off the ground!).

The fur is a magnet for most. Well-maintained, even the adult coat can be cuddlesome. Puppie's fur? Well... if you have trouble socializing, bring your shiba along: you'll make friends in no time. The colours run from tan to red to red sesame and to black. The belly, legs and lower part of the jaw and tail are lighter: tan, cream and white.
